Kuranda

Visitors to Cairns can also go to Kuranda. It is to the west of the city of Cairns. It is at the top of the Kuranda Range. The area was discovered in 1876. Two years later the village of Kuranda was founded. Since it is close to the rainforest Kuranda has an abundance of nature-based attraction, culture and art.

There are several ways to have an enjoyable experience in Kuranda. The Kuranda Scenic Railway is one such experience. The train travels through tunnels and over bridges. Both were built by North Queensland’s pioneers over a century ago. The trip goes through Barron Gorge National Park, a World Heritage listed rainforest. Kuranda Scenic Railway is the original rail journey to Kuranda.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is home to over 1400 tropical butterflies. All of them are from the local region. Rainforestation Nature Park is where tourists can see koalas, crocodiles, snakes, wombats and wallabies. Visitors can also go on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This takes you on a journey over the tropical rainforest on gondola cabins. Skyrail is a great way to experience Australia’s tropical rainforest.

For a relaxing time over water the Kuranda Riverboat Cruise is the way to go. The cruise travels across the upper part of Barron River. Throughout the cruise travelers will learn about the local animal and plant life.

Kuranda is also the place where there are many painters, photographers, wood workers and other craftspeople. The work they do is displayed in markets, galleries and shops all over the village. Visitors can also see them working creatively.
The village is home to some quality restaurants. Visitors can enjoy their meal in the setting of the region’s warm climate. The surroundings provide pleasant views which along with the warm climate complement the good food served with Australian beer and wine.
